The definition of a customer is “one that purchases a commodity or service.” A customer is the party that generates revenue for your business. But in addition to the sales they make, there are other ways a customer can help your business…and at little or no cost to you.
Here are 3 ways a customer can effectively “sell” on your behalf:
1. Give referrals
Word of mouth is a great way to get new customers. It doesn’t cost you anything and you don’t have to chase them; they come to you. Back in the day when I was practicing law and attorney advertisements were prohibited, I got all of my clients through referrals.
How to get referrals
Obviously, you need to cultivate satisfied customers who are willing to share their positive experiences with you. Make it part of the sales process to ask for a referral. For example, an invoice can contain space that customers can use to give you referrals when they pay their bill. Consider reaching out and asking for referrals, such as sending emails to your customers with this request. Reward customers who make referrals, with a small thank-you gift or a discount coupon they can use in the future.
2. Leave positive reviews and testimonials
Maybe your satisfied customers don’t know anyone they can refer you to. They can still help you find new customers by leaving positive reviews or giving you testimonials you can post on your website and social media outlets…electronic word-of-mouth. Positive reviews on your business listing on Google increases your ranking on searches. According to research, 97% of consumers search online about a product and 93% look at reviews before making a buying decision.
How to get reviews and testimonials
Like referrals, you usually have to ask customers to leave you a good review or give a testimonial. But if they say something positive or send you a note of appreciation, ask if you can post this as a testimonial. Check my website to see testimonials for BigIdeasForSmallBusiness.com.
3. Seek follows and likes on social media
Perhaps customers don’t have the time or inclination to write a review or give a testimonial. But in an instant, they can follow you on social media and like your posts. According to one blog on marketing, “The more likes a post or page receives, the better it looks to potential customers and other businesses who might be interested in partnering with you. This is because likes show that people already enjoy what you have to offer and are likely to do so again in the future.” Social media exposure increases your brand awareness and credibility.
How to get followers and likes
First, you need to share your social media sites with customers so they know where to find you. Then, to get them to follow you and like you, it’s essential that you display content that is worthwhile to them.

You certainly have many satisfied customers or you couldn’t stay in business. Don’t hesitate to ask them for referrals, reviews, likes, and other actions to spread the word about your business. Not all your customers will comply, but it never hurts to ask.
